Playgrounds are safe spaces where children and youths develop crucial physical, social, emotional and imaginative skills necessary to gain self-confidence, improve coordination, and advance critical thinking capabilities
There are eleven villages in the Neighborhood Democratic Council of Hamlet/Chance in Mahaicony Region 5 (Mahaica/Berbice) , a large population of children and youths and an unusable playground.
Work on the badly needed playground for Hamlet Chance was started by the previous administration in 2019 and was 90% complete up to the time of the change of Government in 2020.
However since the change of Government the development and completion of the playground ground to a halt
Councilors of the NDC last week by way of a letter to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, complained that as a result of the incomplete state of the playground children are being forced to play on private lands in the area and on the main road itself.
Mr. Winsworth Halley a youthful lifelong resident of Perth Village in Hamlet Chance NDC recently concurred about an urgent need for a proper ball field or recreational fun park for youths in the village.
“This village has a large number of talented sports-oriented youths but we are not able to develop and excel as expected because there is no proper training or recreational facilities.
“We are still waiting for the completion of the playfield that has been promised to us for several months now, but that area is just fenced up with zinc sheets and the current authorities are not making an effort to complete the project.
In last week’s letter the Councilors appealed to the Minister Ramson Jr. to use his good office to help them complete the playground.
The unfinished playground is located at Broomlands one of the eleven villages within the Hamlet/Chance NDC.
This and the ten other villages whose residents will benefit from the completion and upgrade of the playground are all located on the left bank of the Mahaicony River a few miles inland.
They are Anjou, Hamlet, Perth, Fortitude, Spooner, No 10, Supply, Felicity, Strath Campbell and Chance.
