DRY SEASON ADVISORY

Published on : August 17, 2023

The Guyana Fire Service is dedicated to protecting people and property from fires while also providing special services and humanitarian aid.
El Niño is a climatic phenomenon which causes the unusual warming of surface water in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean resulting in a lengthy dry season in Caribbean countries.

According to the Hydrometeorological Service, Guyana is expected to experience below-average rainfall starting in July 2023 and lasting until December 2023.

As such, water supply in conservancies, reservoirs, and inland rivers is expected to decrease or become dry.
Guidelines during this season include trimming dead vegetation, checking, clearing, and repairing drains, as well as ensuring the proper functioning of sump pumps.

Citizens are advised to provide shelter for animals, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities.
Homes and businesses should be equipped with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and smoke alarms.
Evacuation plans should also be implemented in homes and businesses.

Avoid setting grass fires or burning garbage. If you do, ensure that these fires are monitored, as they can quickly get out of hand and spread.
The Guyana Fire Service and Fire Prevention Department plan to improve readiness and response efforts to protect citizens, properties, and the environment during El Niño occurrences.

Part of this plan is to educate citizens on what to do during the dry season, like keeping reservoirs, swimming pools, and domestic tanks filled to capacity.

Citizens are also encouraged to minimize water waste and cooperate with relevant stakeholders.

A nationwide installation of hydrants was initiated in 2022 to ensure community preparedness in case of fires; this project is still underway.

The Guyana Fire Service therefore urges citizens to avoid unauthorized use of fire hydrants and report any water-related issues to local authorities or Guyana Water Incorporated. This is to prevent strain on the water supply needed for firefighting during emergencies.

During El Niño, firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians will be prepared and ready to respond.
Citizens are encouraged to stay alert, practice fire safety measures, and report emergencies via emergency lines 912 and 226-2411-3.
