The Guyana Hydrometeorological Service (Hydromet) and the Ministry of Health have issued warnings for severe, hotter-than-normal weather and up to 80 hot-spell days through October 2026 due to strengthening El Niño conditions.
Temperatures are expected to range from 36°C to 40°C, with Regions 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 facing the most intense heat.
Health and Safety Warnings
- High-risk regions: Regions 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 will experience the most punishing temperatures.
- Illness risks: Public health facilities are on alert for heat exhaustion, heat cramps, heat stroke, and severe sunburn.
- Peak heat avoidance: Stay indoors between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
Recommended Precautions
- Hydration: Drink 8 to 10 cups (2 to 3 litres) of water daily and keep a bottle handy.
- Clothing: Wear light-colored, loose cotton clothing and broad-brimmed hats outdoors.
- Diet: Avoid alcohol and caffeine; eat fresh fruits and vegetables instead of heavy, protein-rich red meats that increase body heat.
- Agriculture & Livestock: Farmers must monitor crop moisture and provide extra water for livestock.
